Since the past class following our dry run, my partner and I handled practicing a little differently from the previous week, since we have a better understanding of what we have done well so far, opposed to the things we know we need improvement on following the dry-run and the review of the video that was taken. A big part would definitely be practicing not looking at the outline as much, along with a better tone on my part since a lot of the comment cards given were to try to sound less mono tone which I assumed to be more towards my end. We also have been able to finish a slideshow with 2 videos demonstrating a bench press with correct form and incorrect form where my partner will be able to locate and point out things that were done correctly or incorrectly in the respective videos. Overall we’ve come a long way with lots of changes to be made but have made great progress.
Since last week, me and my partner went about practicing for our speech in a little different fashion. This week, we placed an emphasis on the finer details of our presentation, along with pure rehearsal of the project. As stated in the last journal, I think we had good content matter, organization, and pacing, which will lead to a smooth well-rounded presentation. This week we also polished our project slideshow which will showcase correct, and incorrect technique on the bench press to show our audience. With our videos added in, I estimate our final presentation for this project will be around six or so minutes long, which I believe is the perfect spot for this presentation. What has been slightly challenging for me personally is my body movement/hand gestures. When speaking in front of a crowd I feel like I have no clue what to do with my hands. When I think I should move them more, I move them too much, and vice versa. A never-ending cycle. However, I’ve come to terms with the fact no one really cares so I just let my hands do whatever they want during a presentation. Overall, me and my partner have both made personal improvements that will contribute to a polished final speech.
Since last class, Skyler and I have been fine tuning our outline and adding more parts for her to talk about while I finish braiding her hair. We then met up on first floor commons to make sure we were on the same page as each other with our final thoughts/ideas and then quickly ran through it once. We made sure that each step was simplified enough to make sure our point got across but also to keep it as an outline. I also read the steps to one of my friends who do not know how to braid to see how well our speech comes across to those who don’t have any knowledge about hair braiding. Some challenged we struggled with is finding time to meet up, since we both have very different school schedules and work schedules it takes a little bit to find a time that works for both of us. Other than that, I feel that Skyler and I work very well together and overall did very well the last few classes we have had of Public Speaking!
This past week, we have been finishing and polishing up our speaking outline and practicing presenting our demonstration. Each time we gave our practice demonstration, I would find things that would be helpful to add to our speaking outline and things that I could take out of it. We also worked on practicing our demonstration to get it within the time frame. During our dry-run, we were over the seven minute time frame, so our challenge has been to condense our speech into the four to seven minute time range. We have overcome this by continuing to practice our speech, and like I said, taking things out that we don’t need or going over things a little quicker. We were able to get it into the time frame with some extra time to spare, so I feel more confident that we will be in the time frame when we give our final speech. We have been communicating via text, as this is easiest and fastest for both of us. I have also worked on finishing the eportfolio requirements for the project. I uploaded our dry-run video to YouTube and added the link into the Project 2 page as well as our selfie for our proof of practice.

This past week I created our pop, pizza dough. I took an old fabric I had bought in the beginning of the year to use as a projection screen for my dorm room, that we no longer used, and grabbed a 5 gallon jug and started tracing on the fabric with a sharpie. I cut out 16 of them. The plan for this is to have Kiley pass out these fabric pizza doughs in hoping that people will want too learn this skill as I’m talking. If not, that okay. Also, Kiley and I have made certain times that work for us to practices our presentation together. We just had our first one yesterday, where we talked about how to make the delivery seem more even talking wise. We also have been taking a look at the criticism that we got , so we can work on the speech through what the audience thinks we need more of. The main points we want to work on before Wednesday is, my mumbling, saying less uh, and feeling confident in our work and presentation. We also worked together to finish the PowerPoint. Presenting seems to be going well in our practices, however we are both equally nervous for the final run, as there are some things that we feel wont go right, such as passing out the dough.. and no one wanting to try to throw it. I am, at least, a little timid by that. https://ptilton.uneportfolio.org/journal-10/
This week we continued to text each other and also work on the document we shared separately. We then made a new outline that we will use on the day of our presentation. The outline we had before was more like a script, opposed to a key points outline. I feel like we did not really go off of our script when we did the dry run, so therefore I think a key points outline would be better for us. That way we do not get distracted by everything else on our script and can just go off of short bullet points to jog our memories. We met up on Tuesday afternoon ro run through our presentation and went over a few finishing touches. Something we struggled with was still finding time to work together. I ended up being able to call out of work early to meet with Brooke to go over our speech. The dry run was very helpful to me personally because I was able to get a feel of what it would be like to demonstrate our skill in front of the class. Also, since we recorded the dry runs, we were able to watch and listen to them. I have never seen myself present something so this gave me an outside perspective on what I sounded like when giving the speech. I feel like Brooke and I work very well together and we were able to get things done despite our busy schedules.
This week, my partner and I have really been working on polishing our version of our speech from last week based on the notes we got from classmates and our own observations. This week we met up twice to work on the speech. The first time we went out together to get some of the ingredients we were missing to make the cookies and talk a bit about what we wanted to do with the speech. The second time, we actually made the cookies while discussing the final touches of both our outline and our speech. A challenge I think I faced this week was not knowing exactly what I was supposed to be doing with the ePortfolio page for this project. I was able to work through this by talking it out with my partner and going over the handouts from the past few weeks. Some successes we had were when we were editing our outline from last week to the final outline. We were able to bounce ideas off of each other very well and we were able to make an outline that I think makes much more sense. And we were able to make a lot of progress with the outline while we were actually baking the cookies which not only helped us be productive but also helped us figure out additional things we may want to add to our speech.
This week, I’ve been working on refining my explanation of the structure of a poker round to make it more concise and straightforward. To do this, I practiced explaining the game to my roommate and a few friends, then asked for their feedback on what was still confusing. I realized that it’s very easy for me to over-explain or ramble, especially on card rankings, because I worry that they don’t fully understand me. I focused on shortening my explanation while making sure all the key points were still addressed. I had to practice to make sure that I didn’t ramble as much so as not to go over time during the final presentation. In terms of communication, there hasn’t been a need to correspond a lot, as we are pretty confident in our parts, in the game, and in our outline. However, we did meet up to practice again, and our presentation practice times were almost 6 minutes on the dot multiple times. One challenge I’d say we faced was making sure our explanations weren’t too overwhelming with information and that we went through the steps clearly while keeping the audience engaged. To fix this, I worked on cutting down our step to key words/phrases in the outline. This helped keep a natural rhythm to the speech. We also practiced an introduction and ending to tie the whole presentation together.
Overall, this week went pretty smoothly. Nadia and I have been communicating by text and that has gone pretty smoothly too.Nadia had a question about when I would upload the video and I was able to get that done pretty quickly later that day. We were able to meet up as well and get the last bits of our presentation practiced and ready to be performed. Thinking back on that practice, there are a few small things that I might suggest to Nadia that we change or add when we get in class. Other than those small things I feel very confident about our presentation and I feel like we’ll do pretty good. Overall, I still think we’re solid in terms of completing the goals of this project.
For this week me and my partner were focused on creating visuals for our speech and listening to the criticisms from our classmates and using that to narrow down what we need as content in our speech. We started off by creating our own video that follows along what we are saying in our speech. This video is a mix of our own footage of playing the game and pictures of certain subjects that we couldn’t recreate on our own. This will allow the audience to understand what we are trying to talk about and explain because it is difficult to visualise without an aid and no background knowledge. We then took a look at notes that our classmates gave us for suggestions and they consisted of slowing down while talking, the content was not consistent and that the intro was too long. We took that feedback and we practiced it more in our free time, cutting out parts that were not needed like when it was created, who created it and its current standing in other media. With these changes we gained confidence to properly present our speech to the class and that the audience would receive it well.
We’ve been refining our speaking outline and practicing our demonstration last week. I decided what to add or remove from our outline for clarity and conciseness after each practice. We also practiced fitting the demonstration within the time frame. In our dry-run, we exceeded the seven-minute time frame, so the greatest challenge has been cutting our presentation to fit the 4–7 minute time frame. To practice this, we continued to rehearse, remove extra information, and speed up in some areas. After several attempts, we managed to fit within the time frame with some time to spare, and this made me believe we will be capable of meeting the time requirement of the final presentation. We have been communicating mainly through text because it is the most convenient means of working together for us. Furthermore, I’ve done the ePortfolio activities, posting our dry-run video on YouTube and linking it on the Project 2 page, along with our selfie as proof of practice.
