I think this process has not had the greatest impact on my public speaking due to my background in English writing. Taking higher level English classes during my high school tenure allowed this process to become second nature, or a review for better words. So in regard to drafting, rehearsing, peer review, etc, not much has changed from my past experiences. However, it is not to be twisted that I came into public speaking very confident. The drafting/outline section of this course is where I find my confidence exclusively, whereas performing the speech live I felt I tended to struggle. However the course so far has landed me plentiful opportunities to get over this fear, and I already feel more confident in my abilities just 6 or so weeks into the course. Moving into our next project, I would keep my drafting/revising skills roughly the same, as I feel my plan is thorough and efficient. However, one thing I would like to emphasize even MORE is rehearsal. Although me and my partner rehearsed plenty times, with even more rehearsal for my next project I feel would be helpful for someone like me. Overall, this course has already improved my confidence in speaking to an audience, and in 8 or so more weeks, I imagine me even better off.
After delivering a solo speech and a partnered presentation, I’ve realized that public speaking isn’t as daunting as I first thought regarding preparation, drafting, and execution. With the second speech, I had more ideas and felt more comfortable with drafting because I understood the structure and expectations better than the first time. The chapters on outlines and speech structure were helpful, especially the tips on adding directional cues and refining the outlines to just keywords or phrases. These strategies helped me prepare more efficiently and (I hope) improved my delivery compared to the first speech. I felt a lot less nervous about the second speech because I knew what to expect, which helped my confidence slightly. However, I still worry that my speeches might be boring to the audience since I’m not inherently funny or outgoing. I plan to brainstorm interesting and funny stories about my person for the third speech to make it more engaging. Also, I want to focus on building a stronger connection with my audience so that my speech has purpose and impact. With more public speaking experience, I’m sure I’ll also improve at adapting to short notice changes, such as last-minute adjustments to my outline. Moving forward, I want to work on building my confidence and making my speech feel more natural and meaningful. Talking about someone important to me in the next speech should help with that, giving me reassurance as well.
Now that we have done speeches 1 and 2, I feel as though my confidence has risen. I feel this has happened because I feel extremely comfortable speaking to all my classmates and know that everyone messes up sometimes. I also feel that I have gained confidence because ‘practice makes perfect’ and we do some sort of speaking each class, so I improve every class. My peers also make a very welcoming environment, and this is partially due to us giving positive after every speech we give. Not only this, but I have grown to like the class because of the great people in it and the interesting topic we get to give speeches on. As we head into our next speech, I aim to rehearse my speech more and be more conscious of my body/ hand’s movements during my speech. I also want to focus on looking up more during my speech and not reading directly off the paper.

How has this process impacted how you think about public speaking? Have you noticed any impact to your sense of confidence? As we moved toward our net major public speaking assignment, what will you do similarly and differently?

The processes of drafting, rehearing, receiving feedback, revising and reflecting has helped me a lot. Especially the reflecting back on it, like theses journals have helped me understand my weaknesses and strengths that I need to work on, so thank you for that. At first, it was very tedious, I wont lie, and I found it annoying since I wanted to get the speech out of the way and not build up to it, but I realized how helpful it actually was and how great full I am for that. This processes allowed me to understand what to and what to not say. This also impacted my self confidence, the first run of the speech was just the idea wand people loved the idea, which gave me some boost and made me very excited to actually give the full run. The next was the other dry run which helped a lot especially with the critiques and THE VIDEO we had to take; it helped me noticed things I didn’t know I did before, such as my mumbling and the movements I would do. I am exited for the next speech actually, don’t get me wrong I hate public speaking, however the class environment makes it comfortable, at least for me, to talk about someone who is special to me, I want to be able to brag about that person, to these people. I know that next time I will have too write out my speeches before like the day of the speech. I procrastinated it way to much last time, so I want to do better with that. I also want to record myself this speech, so that I can continue to see these things that I haven’t noticed before. Thank you.
For the first speech we did I liked that it was relatively short. That took some of the pressure off when presenting. I tend to get very anxious when speaking in front of a group of people, no matter how large or small. Knowing that I only had to be up there for two minutes took some pressure off of me. The second speech was longer, however, since it was a partner speech, I did not have to talk for the whole time. This took some pressure off me as well and made me feel more comfortable. I feel like I was more comfortable for the second speech because I had the first solo speech before, so I had a sense of what it was like. Something that I think I need to work on is using my outline less. I think next time I will try and use a key word outline so I am not reading right off the paper. This would also force me to engage in more eye contact, which is something that I struggle with. Something I feel I do well on is speaking at an appropriate level and clearly. So that is something that I hope to continue to do well.
For the first speech, I enjoyed that it was so short because it took some pressure off of me that I generally feel when presenting a speech in front of people, no matter how large or small the audience is. Getting to speak only for two minutes took some of the pressure off of me again. The second speech was longer but a partner speech, so I wasn’t speaking the entire time. This also made me feel more comfortable and let me build up some confidence after my first speech. I believe that experiencing the first speech also eased me up for the second one. Something that I know I need to improve on is not relying so much on my outline. For the next speech, I am going to make a key-word outline so I am not reading from the paper. This will also encourage me to work harder at keeping eye contact, something I need to improve on. That being said, I do believe I enunciate and speak loudly enough, and I hope to continue doing so. The step of writing, practicing, getting feedback, editing, and introspection has been most helpful. Introspecting through these journals helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses. The process initially seemed tedious, but it’s been useful in increasing my confidence and enhancing my public speaking. The dry run, feedback, and recording helped me identify areas to work on, such as mumbling and extraneous movements. I’m actually waiting for the next speech, even if I dislike public speaking. I feel comfortable in this class, especially when talking about someone close to me. In the future, I’m going to prepare my speech in advance and record myself again to continue to improve.
