  1. Delivering these two speeches felt like a very different process for me. While the first one created a lot of anxiety and worry. I was put on the spot in a classroom I wasn’t very familiar with. As this is my first public speaking class, I wasn’t exactly sure what the criteria were. The second speech I was much more at ease. I felt confident in my knowledge and knowing the steps of how to make an origami crane. The process with a partner made me feel like I wasn’t alone. When she was reading her lines, I was able to also scan the outline to reinsure myself. When the first speech, if I constantly was looking at my outline it would be clear if I was unaware of what I was speaking about. After both speeches I would say I have gained some confidence. I felt so much better the second time around, even in class when stating my opinion, it has been easier. When thinking about speech 3, I am going to practice the same way. This includes practicing a couple days before and presenting it in front of my roommates. Their impute is also so beneficial, it creates a safe space for me to practice. If I could do anything differently it would be to time myself more before the speech. Now that the 3rd speech is coming up, I now know what I can improve on for future presentations.

  2. The first speech was very nerve racking, as I never took a public speaking class before so I didn’t know what to expect from this class. I was really nervous for the first speech, I had a lot of anxiety being alone in front of the class, presenting in front of nobody that I know. The second speech, I felt more confident with. We got to have many dry runs which helped me feel comfortable in front of the class and felt less nervous the more I practiced. I was confident in the skill we picked, as I have known how to make friendship bracelets since I was 10 years old. The first speech I went more off my outline and looked down more since I was reading off it. During the second speech I had more of the outline memorized, since it was a skill that I knew and just had to teach the class. It wasn’t like I was looking down reading off my script, it was more interactive and showing the class how to make a friendship bracelet. I felt more confident and less nervous during the second speech. For the third speech, I am going to practice the same way I did for the second speech. I am going to practice multiple times in front of my classmates and my friends. I am excited to start the third speech, even though it is an alone speech, it might be more nerve racking but with lots of practice I think it will go well.

  3. I think my anxiety about public speaking is still definitely very present. I do believe that it has gotten better since i did my first and second speeches. I think that now that I know my classmates a lot better, it has made me a lot less nervous. I think my anxiety with public speaking will always be there, but I think I am way less worried about doing something embarrassing, after all of the practice that I have done. It makes me feel better to know that almost all people have a fear of public speaking and that the fear is getting easier to manage.
I definitely prefer doing my speeches with someone else and not alone, but I know that I have to be good at both and not just fixate on one. I think it’s easier to work with someone else so that the attention doesn’t feel all on you at once. I think for the third speech, I will definitely be less worried about messing up after I felt the second speech went well. I am excited to talk about someone that means a lot to me, and I think it will be easier for me to remember everything I need to say when it is something that I am passionate about.

  4. Delivering two speeches, one on my own and one with a partner has definitely changed my way of seeing public speaking. Going through the process of drafting, rehearsing, receiving feedback, revising, and reflecting has shown me that public speaking is less about “getting it perfect” and more about being prepared and confident enough to share ideas clearly. In terms of confidence, I have noticed a positive change. Even though I still get nervous, the more I practice and present, the more comfortable I feel in front of an audience. I’ve learned that preparation helps to reduce nerves, and I also discover some areas that I need to keep improving. As we move toward the next major public speaking assignment, I plan to do some things similarly, like staying consistent with practice, asking for feedback, and preparing ahead of time. However, I also want to do a few things differently, such as focusing more on my delivery, maintaining stronger eye contact, and pushing myself to project my voice with more confidence.

  5. Now that I’ve completed 2 public speaking assignments and have had the quality time of reviewing my work, and others work I think I’ve had a small growth now when I’m speaking in public areas. Having to prepare and deliver a piece of content to people you barely know makes my daily social interactions have more flow and more of a natural feeling. I think my confidence from speech 1 to speech 2 improved too and I didn’t feel that panicking feeling when I did the first run around. Some tips I plan on improvising for speech 3 would definitely be watching how much I sway my body and try to keep myself square while not looking like a robot too. As far as planning techniques I’ll probably stay doing relatively the same for preparation. I try to rehearse and time myself every other day to stay fresh on the concepts I want to touch on and make sure I don’t purely rely on my notes. Some things I’ll do differently in my planning process is trying to practice on a partner or have someone hear me present so I can get some criticism in the moment on what worked and didn’t work for them. Overall I’ve seen great improvement in my daily life regarding confidence and I think I’m in a good place in regards to speech 3.

  6. Coming from someone who is genuinely terrified of anything having to do with public speaking, I truly have found our assignments helpful and they have helped me relieve stress rather than as if we were just speaking in front of random people. Yes at first we were all strangers to one another but reflecting on one another’s work really helps in the long run. You get to see how others view your work and most of the time it calms your nerves because of the heart filled words that come out. Not only have I felt more connected to the people around me but I feel more comfortable talking to a crowd, and that is something you would have never heard me say. While going further into public speaking I will always help myself understand that I’m not alone. Everyone is feeling some type of nerves and we just have to all support each other and show respect.

  7. In speech one, I delivered my very first public speech. Speaking publicly is something I always saw as scary and frightening. In the process of crafting my first speech, I was uncertain of what to really write about, or how to sort my thoughts. But after presenting two speeches now, I definitely have a different perspective to public speaking. I think working with someone else on a project can help in ways but also can make you feel uncertain. The uncertainty comes along when you don’t necessarily agree on certain things, but through communication, you can meet halfway with each other. It also teaches you how to communicate clearly with others so that you can put your best foot forward when preparing and delivering a speech. I think it was a good experience to work with someone on a project because teamwork is a great skill to have, and when writing a speech together, it challenges that. Working alone on speech offers challenges on yourself, but not with others. These two influences definitely taught me how to heighten my confidence. As we continue to learn more about speaking publicly through giving speeches, I think that preparing a well put together outline, asking for peer review, and practicing out loud to others will help my public speaking.

  8. Now that I have written two speeches I have gotten a better understand of what it means to write and deliver a speech. It is also helped me learn that public speaking is not so scary and there are many real world examples for when you will have to do it. I’ve learned that a speech shouldn’t just be fully written out on paper but in mostly bullet points and you can add queues to help you remember things like slow down or when to shift to the next topic. I have learned I need to practice my speech to feel more confident giving it and it helps me remember it better. I think with the last speech we did really helped me improve my public speaking by showing me I need to practice it and I will feel more confident and less nervous when giving the speech. What i will do similarly to the last speech for my next speech is keep working on it and revising as well as practicing a lot, this will help give me more confidence when giving the speech and ensure I can stay within the time window and I will do the bullet points of what I want to talk about as well as any queues I may need. What I will do different is stay in the time window.

  9. Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed the practice we’ve done in class and the things I’ve learned on my own throughout the process have helped me become more confident with my speeches. I’ve grown more comfortable with the class and the room, and I’ve found ways to lessen my anxiety walking into the room. For the next project, I want to practice even more beforehand that way I am not nervous about forgetting or messing up. Also, my drafting and editing process has significantly improved as I moved from brainstorming to drafting a script to a full outline.

  10. The big thing that has helped me with public speaking in this class is feeling comfortable in the environment. In the first couple of weeks, I didn’t know many people, and it was awkward. Now I think everyone feels comfortable. I’ve picked up on a few things; rehearsing is probably the most important thing, the two speeches we’ve had, I noticed that confidence comes from repetition. Feeback is another important aspect, the feedback we received on speech two allowed us to take our classes comments and turn out presentation into a revised/better version. Some things I will do differently is practicing more frequently, as a procrastinator, I tend to practice a few days before, but even just practicing for 10 minutes a day after writing an outline will improve the delivery of my speech.

  11. After speech two and the differences between the first speech I feel like having a partner up there to talk as well seems more of a comforting feeling. This is because I don’t have to talk for the entire time while up there and also has someone currently in that moment with me who is feeling the same thing at that moment. I think I also enjoyed the feedback because I feel like I don’t always know what to improve on when public speaking besides the basics of eye contact and saying filler words like um. The feedback was helpful from my peers and the audience watching and listening to it live. I also think the video of our draft was feedback as well for ourselves to watch and look back on this was a very useful tool for me for self feedback. I feel like my confidence was more this speech because I felt more prepared for what I was doing, I practiced more, and I felt more like I knew what I was talking about. I think I felt a little more confident but when watching my draft video back I didn’t seem to present it as much. For the next speaking project what I want to do similarly is practicing as much as I did so I feel ready and prepared when it’s time to give my speech. I also want to continue speaking loudly and clearly without complex wording. I feel like I did that well last time without a shaky voice as much. Something I will do differently is not use as much hand motions. I feel like I did this a lot in the last speech because I was trying to demonstrate things, but this time I will not be as distracting and moving as much. Another thing I want to do differently is give more of the presence that I am confident.

  12. Since delivering two speeches, I have noticed a change in how I view public speaking; my confidence and willingness to deliver speeches has increased, and I’m happy to say my nervousness has declined over this course. I’ve noticed that I prefer presenting speeches with a partner, as it’s less nerve wracking with another speaker up there with me; we can support each other and build off of each other while we are delivering speeches. After completing both speech 1 and speech 2, I realized that it’s not as bad as I make it out to be. If I stutter, the class doesn’t laugh. If I lose my place while speaking, nobody judges me. I go into my speeches expecting them to go much worse than they actually do, so I’m hoping that, for my future speeches, I will have a better understanding of that and be able to go into my speeches with much more confidence. I’m also hoping that, for my next speech, I will prepare much more efficiently, avoiding procrastination and prioritizing good time management. Through doing this, I believe that I will be able to go into future speeches feeling much more prepared than I felt for my past speeches.

  13. After giving two speeches, one alone and one with a partner, I’ve come to understand how important connection, confidence, and preparation are when it comes to public speaking. Speaking by myself first made me feel like I was under a lot of pressure, but it eventually helped me learn how to clearly arrange my thoughts and manage my own pacing. I learned from working with a partner how crucial it is to communicate, work as a team, and balance speaking time to make the presentation exciting and seamless. I’ve discovered that practice makes a big difference by drafting, practicing, and receiving feedback. I felt a little more assured and at ease speaking in front of an audience each time. Also I became aware of how body language, tone, and eye contact can transform a message entirely. I plan on keeping up time myself and practicing aloud like I have in the past as we approach the next speech, but I also want to put more of a focus on relax and having faith in myself rather than overthinking. I’ve come to understand that confidence increases with practice, and every speech I give increases my confidence in my speaking skills.

  14. In high school I did more public speaking than the average student, but the more I did it, it did not get much easier. Since the first speech of class, I have gotten comfortable with my peers and that makes giving speeches a lot easier. I believe giving speeches in this comfortable environment will help me improve my public speaking in the future. I feel like now, almost halfway through the course, I have definitely improved my public speaking skills and my confidence surrounding public speaking, between practicing, actually speaking, and also outlining and writing the speech. My feedback that I received for speech 1 was to not fidget and move my body around as much, which I believe I did better about for speech #2, but I also was doing tasks with my hands which probably helped me not fidget or anything. I tried to think about keeping my feet in one place, and my hands still. Next speech I was to be really thoughtful about eye contact with my audience, and keeping my body still and professional.

  15. Having delivered both a solo and partner speech has changed how I overly view public speaking. It used to feel very intimidating and scary but after going through the whole process of drafting, rehearsing, getting feedback, and revising, it helped me feel more confident in my public speaking. THe solo speech was quite challenging because it was the first speech we did and it was solo so I had to do all parts alone. I think I did fairly well which helped boost my confidence.
The partner speech also came with its own challenges, especially when Sydney was sick and couldn’t rehearse with me. That experience taught me the importance of being adaptable and staying prepared. As we head into the next solo speech, I’ll continue going through the process to ensure the quality of my speech, and making sure to get feedback early on. I also plan to give myself more time for preparation and I overall feel more confident and prepared because of the past two speeches.
