DRY-RUN JOURNAL: IN-CLASS #2>>>After doing my dry run of the speech about my dad, I realized a few things that are working and a few that need improvement. What’s working is the overall message and emotional connection. I can tell the topic means a lot to me, and that comes through when I speak. But what isn’t working is the lack of detail and specific stories. I think I need to add more personal examples to make my speech feel more vivid and engaging for the audience. Because of that, I plan to rebuild my outline and organize it in a way that includes these new stories while still keeping a clear flow. Reflecting on this makes me realize that my speech will be stronger if I balance emotion with more descriptive storytelling. So hopefully for next week’s class when I go and do my speech, I am able to give a speech that describes my dad in a way people can picture.
DRY-RUN JOURNAL: IN-CLASS #2>>>Through this speech process, I can discover the ups and downs that I faced while presenting. I thought I could have slowed down a bit and made my speech outline flow more clearly. The comments told me to make more eye contact with the audience, which is something I will work on. I think the overall topics for my speech are well put, but making them all tie together nicely is very important. I think there is definitely room for taking things out to elaborate more on a specific topic. I think adding little details to my stories or body parts of my speech will help the audience gain a better understanding as to who my mom is and the impact she has on me. To go with this, it is important to take this and tie it into the conclusion to wrap up the whole purpose of the speech.
DRY-RUN JOURNAL: IN-CLASS #2>>>The form my speech is taking is a toast. I like the stories and the points I made but I really want to re work the the whole wording and especially the introduction. I also need to add more because I was a little under the time. I like the core ideas and will keep those in my speech. Challenges are the format and wording, I think I really need to add why I think my dad made me the person who I am today as well as a little more background on him. I’m going to start from scratch but use my last speech as a little bit of framework to help keep those core ideas. I need to add more and I want to also add another story. I also need to practice. This will help with the filler words and I think I missed some marks because I was trying not to look at my speech so much. All of these things combined will help me greatly to better this speech.
DRY-RUN JOURNAL: IN-CLASS #2>>>I think my speech is shaping up pretty well as its a heartfelt tribute to my father and all hes done for me. I think i can develop his story from a teen parent to a fire chief a little better and in more detail and also i can further develop and show how he truly did shape who i am today. What’s working: the emotional connection and key themes come through well. What’s challenging: pacing and smooth transitions. I want to add a vivid story to make it more engaging and work on slowing down when I get nervous. After my dry run, I noticed I rush through emotional parts and need clearer transitions. Next, I’ll focus on practicing pacing, adding a specific anecdote, and using varied tone to elevate the speech.
This speech is becoming more than a tribute but it’s a reflection of the values my dad taught me. I’m excited to keep refining it for a powerful delivery.
DRY-RUN JOURNAL: IN-CLASS #2>>>What needs to happen after I presented my 3rd dry run speech is definitely more practice. The first speech I practiced a lot more and felt good about it. When going over this speech in more dorm, it sounded better and I hit the time requirements. I believe when I got up in front of the class, I did talk a lot faster. With talking slower and going into great details I can assure myself that I will be closer to the time range. I also felt I had a shaky tone today. With more confidence I have a feeling my overall speech will be a lot smoother and more engaging for the audience.
DRY-RUN JOURNAL: IN-CLASS #2>>>I think I can really improve on making my speech longer and I can work on providing more examples. I also need to work on using less filler words like “um” and “like”. Another thing I need to work on is my pacing. I tend to get nervous and rush through my speech and I end up not meeting the time requirement. I also want to focus on is confidence and delivery, so I can make the speech sound more natural.
My speech form is an introduction, I am talking about my dad and giving a little intro on him. I think my overall speech is really good, it has two stories in it, and I gave some background on the person he is and how he has influenced me and impacted my life. My challenge is just turning my speech into an outline. When I first started this speech, I started to write a story on him and not really just an outline. So during my dry run I was basically reading off my computer the entire time which wasn’t effective. I looked at my dry run video and noticed that I talked way too fast and I needed to slow down my pace. This week and next week I am going to rehearse my speech every day a couple of times so by the time it’s time for me to deliver my speech I will be prepared and not have to look down all the time to read off the script. I will finalize my script this week and have it ready for next wednesday.
What needs to happen for my next speech is for me to be less anxious when I am in front of everyone. I was not nervous at all for speech 2, but for speech 3, when I did my dry run, I was extremely nervous. I want to make sure my speech is long enough because it wasn’t for the dry run, but I am not sure what I need to add. I realized after the dry run that I needed more practice to help me be less nervous. After I received the feedback from my classmates, I felt better about presenting it, and I watched the video of my dry run, and I realized I also needed to appear less nervous, like playing with my hands and practicing making more eye contact with my classmates. I hope that the speech goes better than my dry run did, and I believe that it will.
Between last class and the date where I am to give me speech it is important that I spend a portion of each day working on my speech. I am pretty much ready as far as composition, I just need to focus on a few things. I need to make sure that I rehearse my speech as much as I can, in order to memorize my speech, and also to feel confident. I need to rehearse my speech in front of friends or by recording myself to ensure I can have a good performance day of. I also need to work at making my outline as simple as possible, but also get to a point where I can avoid looking at my outline. My biggest flaw after watching my dry run video, was my lack of eye contact with my audience. I know that this was because I was reading off of my script for the essay, and had not practiced enough to memorize my speech, so this shows why it is important for me to memorize the speech.
The form of speech I’ll be choosing is a toast to my mother. My speech consists of lots of praising, reminiscing and congratulating which resembles the contents of a toast. Some ideas I really like about my speech are my stories. The stories catch the audience’s attention and it allows them to really get the feeling of what you’re trying to project. Some things I’ve been working on after watching my recorded dry run would be transition words. I should focus on speaking clearly and not saying “like” and “um”. It’s a lot easier said than done, but if I can negate the amount of times I use those words I think It will come out smoother and be a better overall speech. I’ve been running solo dry runs and recording myself to try and limit transition words for extra practice too. Another habit I could work on is hand movements or swaying, it wasn’t too much of a negative factor, but it was something I definitely noticed and want to improve on for my final run. Some things that are working for me would be I think I did a decent job at addressing the crowd and not staring at my outline as my outline is generally simplified with only short bunches of words to help me stay on track and in order. I liked my timing too, as I was just over 4 minutes and I think that’s a perfect time to where the audience can enjoy a speech without it dragging on for too long.
My speech is a toast to my mother; the main theme of my speech is “more than a mom.” I think my speech encompasses a lot and also takes on a lot, like several anecdotes and sentiments. The past week, I have added more content to bulk up my speech and hopefully add another minute. I’ve appreciated all of the feedback I have received from my classmates and have implemented some of it into my speech. I got one suggestion saying that it sounds like my mom is dead, because I didn’t say she was “physically here”; overall, I feel well prepared and ready to deliver my product. I will say that after playing back the dry run speech, there were several times where I had to look down and would get lost in the sauce. I also seemed nervous, which was strange. Over the week, I have done a couple more trials, and it’s all landing between the 3:30-4:00 minute mark.
The form my speech is taking a going well. I think I have all my points lined up and are ready to share. I think though I do have room to add additional thoughts just to make my points sound more rounded and connected as a whole. I think my structure of my speech is written well with a three stories that show how my mom inspired me to be where I am today. I also received a lot of feedback on how I structured these stories in chronological order to my age and progression as a young woman. After watching back my dry run video, I need to work on memorizing the speech better. I was looking down at my computer for a lot of it and I need to make better eye contact. I think I can do a better job pronouncing my words and slowing down a bit. To deliver my speech next time, these are all things I am going to work on and practice so my speech is at its best ability.
For the next class, I’m going to work on committing more of my speech to memory because I got a lot of feedback about eye contact. I have also been preparing by practicing more and getting more comfortable standing in front of a crowd. I tend to rush more and feel anxious when I stand in front of everyone, so I want to prepare for that in advance. Overall, my speech is more commemorative, and I am trying to incorporate a specific theme of what I learned and why it’s different from what a parent could teach. Also, I know certain parts landed more than others, so I want to make sure the delivery is as polished as the actual words to make it more meaningful. During my dry run, I accidentally went out of order, so I made sure to make note of that and practice going in the right order.
As we were presenting our dry-run to the class, I was definitely feeling nervous. More than usual, I don’t know if it was because it was more personal or what the problem was. For when we present for the final time I am going to focus on not letting myself get tied up in my nerves. I also need to work on getting to the 4 minute mark, because last time I still had room for improvement. While I presented I found there were parts I forgot to add into my speech. So that will definitely help in making my speech longer. Overall for the final deliverity, I am going to try and be more confident while presenting and my goal is to make that 4 minute mark. For this to all happen I know I need to put a lot of practice into it and focus on staying calm.
Before the delivery of my eulogy to my Great-Grandmother, I need to add a lot more to the speech – specifically about her early life – in order to meet the time limit. I also need to work on my eye contact with the audience so I can be more engaged with my classmates when I’m speaking. I do feel as though the clearness and overall projection of my voice was very good and understandable. The biggest thing I need to work on is definitely the length of my speech; if i don’t add more to my speech, it will be so under the time limit and will greatly affect my grade. I am most likely going to write about her children, her experience in modeling, and her overall upbringing (including her time in Kansas during the dustbowl). I might also speak more about the things happening after her death, like the process of selling her house and how close we as a family have been brought together. I am hoping that, with the addition of these things, my speech will make it to at least four minutes and allow people to learn more about her beautiful life and how it shaped her into the wonderful person she was.
I felt I did better for doing a speech on my own and better then how I normally do. There is still tons of room for improvement. This was my first speech about someone else and having emotion behind it and this made me feel anxious as I am someone who does now like to speak about that stuff. One thing to work on for my final delivery is to make sure I don’t say um as much and to just directly speak. Overall I feel like I did better speaking alone then normal and there are some small things to add. For this week I hope to have more confidence and to speak clearly and directly.
